A 55-year-old Manipuri musician, Chongtham Vikram Singh, was allegedly beaten to death in Delhi after asking a group of young men to stop making noise outside his home late at night. The incident took place in Kilokri village in South Delhi on September 6. Vikram Singh, a celebrated guitarist and former lead guitarist of the 1980s rock band Phoenix, was attacked after a dispute with delivery and packaging workers from nearby eateries. He was rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Okhla but succumbed to his injuries the following morning. Vikram came from a renowned musical family. His mother, Chongtham Kamala, was a celebrated classical singer who was known as the “Lata Mangeshkar of Manipuri cinema.” His death has sparked protests by members of the North East Students’ Society Delhi University (NESSDU), candlelight marches, and strong reactions from political leaders. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi questioned the Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police over the safety of people from the Northeast in the national capital. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Arvind Kejriwal and Inner Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam have also demanded justice and strict action. Delhi Police registered a case under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, arresting eight accused, including seven adults and one minor. The case has once again raised serious questions about the safety of people from the Northeast in Delhi and the city’s law-and-order situation.
