“May I Live With Ease” is part of a series of songs inspired by the Metta Sutta and Sharon Salzberg’s teachings on mettā—loving-kindness, friendship, goodwill, and the cultivation of well-being for ourselves and others. At the center of this song are four intentions commonly used in loving-kindness meditation: May I be safe. May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I live with ease. Salzberg describes these phrases as a way of directing loving-kindness toward ourselves. Rather than simply repeating words, the practice gives our attention somewhere to rest and offers a way to cultivate the qualities represented by those wishes. This song is structured as a meditation that gradually becomes movement. It begins quietly with the four wishes directed inward. Safety, happiness, health, and ease are offered to this body, this heart, and this life. As the rhythm develops, the phrases become increasingly embodied—the meditation moving from something we contemplate into something we can breathe, feel, and carry with us. Then the practice begins to widen. Someone dear to us is brought to mind: May you be safe. May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you live with ease. From there, the intention expands further. The individual I becomes you, then we, and eventually all. This reflects the larger movement of mettā practice described by Salzberg: loving-kindness begins close to home and gradually extends outward until the wish for well-being embraces all beings. The repetition throughout the song is intentional. Each return to the phrases offers another opportunity to inhabit their meaning. The words remain simple while the circle surrounding them becomes larger: May we be safe. May we be happy. May we be healthy. May we live with ease. And finally: May all be safe. May all be happy. May all be healthy. May all live with ease. One breath. One heart. One wish for happiness widening through the world. 📚 WANT TO LEARN MORE?
