Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus is based on Psalm 127. This movement is verses 2b-3. The Latin text and the King James translation are copied below. I suppose the mood is a reflection of the nighttime setting and the mystery of life. Cum dederit dilectis suis somnum. For so he giveth his beloved sleep.
