In this video, I delve into the intricate artistry behind Chopin’s Mazurka Op. 17, No. 4, one of his most sophisticated and elegant works from a harmonic point of view. A mazurka is a traditional Polish dance in triple meter, often characterized by dotted rhythms and accents on the second or third beat. The word "mazurka" comes from "Mazur," referring to the Mazovia region of Poland. Frédéric Chopin composed 59 mazurkas between 1825 and 1849, showcasing a variety of moods and styles. In this case, Chopin displays his mastery of melodic variation, ornamentation, and chromatic harmony to evoke deep emotion and complexity. The harmonic ambiguity of the opening and coda is striking, and the innovative use of the V7 - iiib progression with chromatic descending sequences is one of the most beautiful and unique chord progressions written by Chopin.
