Pickering, a small market town in North Yorkshire, flooded four times in eight years. The government said a concrete flood wall was too expensive. So the town tried something radical: they went into the forest and piled up logs. One hundred and sixty-seven leaky wooden dams, two hundred heather bales, and a two-million-pound budget — one-tenth the price of the rejected wall.
