This is one of the most fought-over strips of land on Earth — smaller than many countries you could name, and yet for over 3,000 years, empire after empire has bled for it, prayed for it, conquered it, and lost it.
This video tries to tell that story as fairly as possible, because almost nothing about it is simple. From the ancient Israelites and the temple in Jerusalem, through the Babylonian exile, Rome, the birth of the diaspora, the arrival of Islam and the Dome of the Rock, four centuries of Ottoman rule, the rise of Zionism, the Balfour Declaration, the Holocaust, the 1947 UN partition, and the events of 1948 that one people call independence and another call the Nakba.
This is not a story of good guys and bad guys. It is a story of two peoples, each with a deep, real, and ancient connection to the same small piece of land — and a history so tangled that pulling one thread unravels a thousand others.
Understanding the history doesn't tell you who is right. But it does tell you why this conflict is so hard, and why peace has proven so painfully elusive.
If you made it to the end, thank you for being the kind of person who wants to understand a hard thing instead of just shouting about it. Tell me in the comments — respectfully — what part of this history you didn't know before.
