UNDER THE BREATH
Five Meditations in Plain English
The concluding album of the Sotto Voce series
Music by Museca
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
For seven albums, Sotto Voce spoke through borrowed tongues — Italian, French, Spanish, Russian, German, Japanese, and the multilingual work from which the series began.
English was always present underneath them: the language of thought and translation, but never the language doing the singing.
Under the Breath is that voice’s turn.
Sotto voce means, in plain English, under the breath. After a series devoted to music that speaks quietly, intimately, and close to silence, the title finally translates the name of the series itself.
The album draws upon the English contemplative and metaphysical tradition: the plain-spoken spiritual intensity of George Herbert, the luminous darkness of Henry Vaughan, and the astonishment of Gerard Manley Hopkins. These are not settings of their poetry; the lyrics are entirely original. What they inherit is a discipline — large questions carried by small words, ordinary rooms, fields, tables, windows, light, darkness, breath, and silence.
Its nine tracks move through the hours of a single English day and night, though the journey is interior rather than literal. A dim room before dawn becomes a morning field. Midnight becomes wakefulness. Evening returns the listener to a lamp, a table, an open door, and finally a threshold.
Five words carry the sung meditations:
near — still — here — stay — grace
Each arrives quietly and changes meaning as the album continues. In the final meditation, the first four return together and are given their final name: grace.
The instrumental world belongs equally to the contemplative design. Solo violin opens the album and returns at the end. Clarinet appears first in morning warmth and later in the darker hour before light. French horn carries midnight longing. Cor anglais gives voice to the morning field. Two string choirs answer one another at dusk. Cello holds the warmth of the evening table. A viola, unheard until the threshold, enters alone over the album’s only organ.
Beneath almost everything is a quiet heartbeat pulse. It crosses the album until At the Threshold, where it disappears completely. When it returns in the final track, the ground itself seems restored. In the closing moments, the pulse slows, fades, and finally goes out.
Its nine movements form one continuous meditation:
▸ Tenderness, at First Light — a dim room before morning, and the discovery that what seemed absent may have been near all along
▸ Interlude: Morning Unfolding — clarinet and strings opening the room outward into morning
▸ Longing, at Wakeful Midnight — the soul awake while the world sleeps, learning that longing need not mean lack
▸ Interlude: The Hour Before Light — the morning clarinet heard again in darker weather as dawn begins to enter
▸ Wonder, in the Morning Field — dew, leaf, wren, and light; the realization that one is not merely looking at the world but standing inside it
▸ Interlude: Turning Homeward — two distant string choirs answering across the declining day
▸ Recognition, at the Lit Table — an open door, a lamp, bread already laid, and a welcome that asks nothing to be earned
▸ Interlude: At the Threshold — pulse and harp disappear; organ and solitary viola hold the breath before the final door
▸ Grace, in the Deep of Night — near, still, here, and stay return together; the violin comes home; everything the day gave is finally recognized as grace
At the album’s quietest point, the English word still briefly remembers the languages that preceded it:
ancora — encore — aún — noch — still.
Then English takes the final word.
Everything is grace.
And I, here, still.
This is the final album of the Sotto Voce series. It is best heard from beginning to end, quietly, with the kind of attention that notices a returning instrument, a word planted several tracks earlier, or a pulse understood only when it disappears.
