Deonar has been receiving Mumbai's garbage since 1927. Today, it holds an estimated 18.5 million tonnes of legacy waste, with garbage mountains reaching nearly 40 metres high. The BMC has undertaken a ₹2,537-crore biomining project to clear this massive dumping ground. But questions remain about methane emissions, contaminated leachate, pollution, fresh waste dumping and the safety of the clean-up process. Meanwhile, residents living in Govandi, Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar and Mahul continue to raise concerns about foul smells, smoke, dust and possible health risks. And with a portion of Deonar's land linked to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, another important question emerges: will the reclaimed land actually be safe for people to live on? So, what's really happening at Deonar? Is Mumbai finally addressing a nearly century-old garbage problem, and who's ensuring that the people living next door aren't paying the price? Watch this Deep Dive as we look beyond the garbage mountain. #DeonarDumpingGround #Mumbai #MumbaiNews #Deonar #Govandi #Mankhurd #MumbaiPollution #Landfill #Biomining #EnvironmentalPollution #DharaviRedevelopment #DeepDive #LokmatTimes
