Behind every warm room stood 30 tons of coal in a cellar vault, a furnace fed every 4 hours through the night, and a housemaid kneeling at a dozen cold grates by 5:30 in the morning. The rich house bought its coal for about $5 a ton; three streets away, the tenement poor paid $12 a ton, buying it by the pail. On the top floor of the same house, the servants who made all of that warmth slept in cold rooms with a skin of ice on the water by dawn.
