STORYLINE:
Italian soldiers and paramilitary police on Thursday returned to the site of Wednesday's suicide bomb attack in Nasiriyah which killed at least 26 people, 18 of them Italians.
While some soldiers kept guard at the Italian paramilitary base, others sifted through the damage caused by the blast.
Wednesday's attack in Nasiriyah was the deadliest against an American ally since the occupation began and appeared to send a message that international organisations are not safe anywhere in Iraq.
The 18 Italians who died included 12 Carabinieri paramilitary police, four soldiers, a civilian working at the base and a documentary filmmaker.
Eight Iraqis also were killed, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition said.
