Maezawa is a farming village of thatched, L-shaped farmhouses in Minamiaizu, in the mountains of southern Fukushima. Its 20 traditional houses — 13 of them magariya, where the family and the farm horse lived under one roof — were rebuilt all at once after a fire in 1907, which is why the village looks the way it does. It was selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2011, and people still live in it. We flew over it on a morning in late October. At 7:30 the valley fog had the village inside it; by ten to eight the village had cleared and the fog lay in bands on the slopes. The film ends on the Tateiwa River, which runs in front of the village. No narration — our own aerial footage, with AI-generated music. There is a second film from the same morning: the Byobuiwa Crags, about ten kilometres away. Admission, the village rules and how to get there without a car, in the write-up: goento.jp/guides/minamiaizu-maezawa-byobuiwa See also: Byobuiwa crags from the air:    • White Rock, Red Leaves — the Byobuiwa Crag...   #Maezawa #Minamiaizu #Fukushima #Aizu #Japan #前沢曲家集落 In this film: 0:00 Maezawa through the morning fog 0:20 Rising out of the fog 1:05 Fog on the slopes 1:27 Straight down on the village 1:38 Thatched roofs from above 2:06 The fog lifting off the village 2:23 The Tateiwa River, straight down 2:42 Along the river in autumn
