Kikombe Cha Pili (Swahili for “The second cup”) by Rob Matare is a slow afrobeats Swahili love song about a short visit that turns into a long conversation over tea. A gentle East African afropop and bongo flava groove from the album December People.

She is standing in the doorway, saying the journey home is still long. He has already put tea on the table and asks her to sit for a few minutes. She asks about his work and he finds himself saying far too much; her tea goes cold and she still has him laughing. One bus passes, another will come. He is not holding her, the choice is hers, but he would love her to stay. Then she takes off her coat and pulls her chair closer, and tells him about her dream of going back to study. He had only ever seen her from a distance and never knew she carried all this. She hands him her cup and asks for a little more. As the night ends he asks her to come early tomorrow, so they can finish the story.
“Kikombe cha pili, bado tunaongea.” (The second cup, we are still talking.)
This visualizer brings clean guitar and a gentle groove to an East African love song in Swahili, the language of Kenya and Tanzania. It is about slow love, a first real conversation and the moment a friendly visit quietly becomes something more.
A SMALL GUIDE TO THE WORDS
Kikombe cha pili means “the second cup”, and bado tunaongea means “we are still talking”. Chai is tea, and kesho means tomorrow: the song ends with an invitation to come early tomorrow and finish the story. Swahili is spoken across Kenya and Tanzania, and the lyric video shows the words on screen so you can sing along even if you are just learning the language.
THE SOUND
Clean guitar and a gentle groove carry the song at an easy, unhurried pace. It sits where bongo flava, Swahili afropop and slow afrobeats meet: warm, melodic and made for evenings when nobody is in a rush.
WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT
This is a story of slow love. A friendly visit quietly becomes something more, one refill of tea at a time. There is no pressure in it: he is not holding her, the choice is hers, and he simply makes room.
