Jamaica has been piling up a rust-red waste for more than 70 years. Now that “red mud” could become one of the island’s most strategic resources. Tests found rare earth elements in it at concentrations roughly 25 times higher than in the Earth’s upper crust. Those are the same metals China controls and has started restricting. In this video, we break down what rare earths are and why they power electric cars, wind turbines, smartphones and fighter jets. We explain how China came to control about 90% of the world’s rare earth processing and 94% of magnet production, and why its export controls have the world worried, with a key suspension set to expire on November 10th, 2026. We go inside the pilot plant built at Hope Gardens in Kingston with Japan’s Nippon Light Metal. The plant was handed to the Jamaica Bauxite Institute in 2014, and Jamaica holds 50% of the patent rights to new technologies from the partnership. We also look at why the project went silent for a decade, and why Minister Floyd Green revived it in 2026, including the fight over red mud from Jamaican bauxite sitting in Louisiana. We also cover the honest side: this is a revived project, not a brand-new invention; Jamaica’s potential output is small compared to China’s; separation and magnet-making are the real bottleneck; red mud is hazardous; and the legal questions over ownership and royalties are still open. From Kingston to Mandeville to May Pen to Brooklyn, Toronto and London, this is a Jamaican story the world is starting to pay attention to. 👇 Tell us in the comments: should Jamaica partner with Japan or the US to process its rare earths, or build the industry at home? 📚 Key sources: Jamaica Information Service, Jamaica Bauxite Institute, The Gleaner, Jamaica Observer, International Energy Agency, S&P Global, GlobalData, Nippon Light Metal, CARICOM, Mining.com. ⚠️ The red mud rare earth project is being revived and is not yet in commercial production. Timelines, royalty rules and export control dates may change.
