Argos no Senshi is set in the Sacred Land of Argol, structured around the Dragon-Crying Valley, Gerlozeo.🐉 From this central hub, Gates lead to surrounding regions such as the Sueru Mountain Area🏔️, Garaganda Mountain Range🧘, Rolsenia Valley and Elga Forest🌲, Ragrasand Highlands and Sky Island Larpious🌤️, and Gensei Mountain ending at Zagira's Cave🦇. Progress is ability- and item-gated, repeatedly drawing the player back to the hub as new routes open.
A flying fortress appears over Argol, ruled by the Beast King Liger,🐯🦁 and the Beastmen steal the Gate of Peace. An ancient prophecy calls a warrior to rise from the land of Argos; the player controls that warrior and is directed to seek the Battle God Indra👁️ and reclaim peace.
Controls use Controller I only. The D-pad moves, runs, crouches, and climbs; in Gerlozeo, movement is four-directional while running and eight-directional while jumping. The A Button jumps and confirms; the B Button attacks and confirms. Combat centers on the Disk Armor,⛓️ a chained weapon that strikes only in the direction faced, making timing and positioning central.
Press Start to open the Sub Screen, which shows the Life Meter (health), Warrior's Power, Latent Abilities, and item panels. Life begins at 3 segments and can grow to 12 as enemies are defeated. Arm Strength (attack power) and Chest Strength (durability) increase through combat. Enemies may drop Spirit Power Capsules, filling the Spirit Power Meter up to 7 segments; Spirit Power is spent to activate Power Up (extends chain), Warrior's Spirit (damages all enemies on screen), or Life Recovery (fully restores life).
Hermits🧘 grant support and key tools such as the hermit's Chain Sickle,🪝 which can hook onto certain cliffs and trees for vertical traversal. With the Warrior's Crest,🏵️ specific hermits provide Life Recovery Medicine,🏺 usable from the Sub Screen. Progress also depends on finding five manifestations of Indra and receiving Indra's Five Sacred Relics:
Wind Pulley allows crossing ropes between pegs.
Flame Bowgun creates a rope at an empty peg.
Warrior's Crest enables advanced recovery support.
Indra Armor increases durability growth rate.
Pegasus Flute unlocks access to the final route.
The world operates through two modes: side-scrolling action regions (combat and platforming) and top-down connector regions (combat, navigation and routing). Each major ability recontextualizes earlier areas and forces return traversal through Gerlozeo, forming a repeating pattern of: acquire ability, return to hub, open a new route. Enemy behavior reinforces posture-based play where crouching and jumping are often required, and defeated enemies may drop a Life Target,⭐ restoring one Life Meter segment. When life runs out, pressing Start resumes from the previous area's starting point.
This Famicom release is conceptually derived from the arcade Argos no Senshi, but was designed as an original console experience rather than a direct conversion. Its core action RPG loop combines real-time combat and character growth with relic-gated traversal and Spirit-based abilities, leading to boss encounters and a single ending after defeating Liger. Difficulty rises gradually with localized spikes driven by regional escalation, knowledge-dependent routing, and limited recovery.
