Hangin' Out in Kichijoji - Tokyo Record Style

Welcome back to another of my stomping grounds, Kichijoji, a neighborhood and town on the northwest side of Tokyo, at the end of the Inokashira Line (that starts in Shibuya) and along the Chuo Line (which cuts directly across Tokyo), where I have never lived but where I have been tromping around for 20 years in Tokyo. Kichijoji is a charming, and ever-so-slightly removed neighborhood of Tokyo, in fact, it’s technically outside of Tokyo’s 23 Wards and in Mitaka City, I believe. What makes Kichijoji special is that it’s like a condensed, easier, lighter version of Tokyo at large, replete with all the major outlets, shopping, restaurants, galleries, plazas, parks, museums, theaters that you’d only expect to find in a city 10 times its size, but without all the super crowded, noisy, an busy streets. It’s easy and quick to navigate around its several distinct districts, and also wander off into its charming semi-residential neighborhoods, one of which contains the sprawling and beautiful Inokashira Park, the pride and joy of Kichijoji. I took a stroll here today just to kill some time while my daughter was in a weekend morning activity. I did visit the record store sections of Book Off and Hard Off, two known 2nd hand media and goods shops, but I didn’t take you to some of Kichijoji’s more major chaines (Disk Union, HMV) or any of the indie shops (Coconuts or Rare Records). This was more of a whirl around the town (and a long one at that), and won’t be for all of you. Far-from-exhaustive report from Kichijoji and probably just one rambling video in a series of many more to come.
