MzzBev Creates Come Draw With Me

Come along with me in the studio as I create a brand-new retro Christmas character—from poseable art figure to finished illustration! Meet Lulu, my trusty little poseable drawing model. When I need help getting just the right pose for one of my retro gals, I pose Lulu, take a photo, upload it to my iPad, and use her as the starting point for my drawing in Procreate. For this project, I wanted to create a cheerful 1960s-inspired Christmas gal for my new “Christmasfy Your House” ad. Once Lulu helped me get the pose just right, the real fun began! I drew my character with a little Laura Petrie-inspired flair—a red cashmere sweater, stirrup pants, black flats, flipped-up ’60s hair, and a gold headband decorated with Christmas ivy and red berries. And, of course, she needed a strand of colorful Christmas lights! In this 15-minute studio vlog, you’ll see the process from that very first photo of Lulu, through sketching, drawing and coloring in Procreate, all the way to the finished character. But she wasn’t finished yet! Once my retro Christmas gal was complete, I turned her into clip art and incorporated her into the final “Christmasfy Your House” advertisement, which became the hero image for my Etsy listing. I love showing the behind-the-scenes process because sometimes a finished illustration looks so simple—but there are quite a few little steps that happen before we get there!
