Genghis Khan is remembered as one of the most feared conquerors in history.
But how did a young man from the Mongolian steppe rise from poverty, exile, and tribal conflict to become the founder of the largest contiguous land empire in history?
In this video, we follow the extraordinary rise of Temüjin — the man who would become Genghis Khan.
We look at how he survived a brutal childhood, united the divided tribes of Mongolia, transformed the traditional Mongol military, and developed a system based on loyalty, discipline, mobility, intelligence, and ruthless strategy.
But military strength alone does not explain his success.
Genghis Khan understood something many rival rulers did not:
An army could win a battle. But an organized system could win a war.
From the Mongolian steppe to northern China and Central Asia, his campaigns changed the balance of power across Eurasia.
And although Genghis Khan did not personally conquer the entire territory later controlled by the Mongol Empire, the state and military system he created gave his successors the foundation to expand it even further.
So how did Genghis Khan conquer so much?
The answer was not simply horses.
It was organization, adaptability, intelligence, strategy — and a willingness to use fear as a weapon.
