If you're wondering how to put your Boxster 986 into service mode to access the top of the engine, here's my easy to follow step by step method.
Over and above showing how to open Boxster 986 engine compartment, I'll also show you how to access and open the front engine cover. This cover allows you to access the drive belt, and all the auxiliary drive components from the alternator down to the water pump and AC compressor.
Between the top engine access, the front engine access, and engine access from under the car; there isn't much you can't service on a Porsche 986 engine from these three areas. It's actually quite impressive to see how well the engine is fit into this small area while still maintaining access to most of it.
Our little 1999 Porsche Boxster 986 also has an aftermarket convertible top. I chose the Sierra Auto Tops one with the better quality A5 Acoustic canvas and heated glass window upgrade, which is a great improvement over the original top and vinyl plastic window. The glass window does however cause one little hassle when putting the Boxster into service mode, but I show my easy work-around in this video.
