The Sublime Rock of Ideology: Why We Hike into the Wild

Why do we hike into remote, unforgiving places? The answer is not what you think. We set out on an overnight hike through rugged Australian bush, pushing through overgrown ridgelines and camping on an isolated rock platform overlooking a bay. All this to test one idea: there is no clean escape from ideology, not even out here. Using Slavoj Žižek's The Sublime Object of Ideology as our trail companion, we dismantle the myth of "pure, untouched nature" and the ideology of wilderness romanticism, while asking what's really going on when we chase a summit, obsess over ultralight gear, or push our bodies to exhaustion for a view. Along the way we visit Kafka's parable of the man before the law, Lacan's account of the Real, and Hegel's negation of the negation, all tested against dense bush, dead ends, and two days of carrying everything we need on our backs.
