San Francisco was once the most glamorous city in America. It was built on gold, rebuilt from ashes, and later crowned the capital of tech. So how did a $1.2 billion mall in the heart of downtown end up seized by its lenders for $133 million?
This documentary traces the full rise and fall of San Francisco, from the Gold Rush and the Comstock silver fortunes through the 1906 earthquake, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the tech boom. Then it follows the collapse: record office vacancy, empty storefronts, and a downtown built for commuters who stopped showing up. Most of all, it shows why the city’s downfall was built into its foundations from the very beginning.
