Dark food history: Parliament built London’s gin trade on purpose, then spent twenty-two years legislating against it.
In 1690 Parliament opened grain distilling to anyone, in an Act whose own title called it encouragement. A dark food history documentary on the London gin craze: the 1736 Act that priced gin out of existence, the informers paid to enforce it, the excise ledgers that showed it failing, and the 1743 debate in which the Lords heard the excise records instead of the physicians.
