📌 Class 12 Physics | Semiconductor Electronics: Intrinsic & Extrinsic Semiconductors and p-n Junction Diode 🔌⚡Welcome back to Run Academy! 🎓 In today’s essential lecture, we dive into Semiconductor Electronics for Class 12 Physics. Understanding the physics of Intrinsic and Extrinsic semiconductors and how a p-n junction diode operates is crucial for scoring high marks in your CBSE/State Board Exams and competitive exams like JEE & NEET. Let's break down energy bands, doping, depletion layers, and biasing step-by-step! 🚀📚 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO:🔹 1. Semiconductors: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic• 🔬 Intrinsic Semiconductors: Pure semiconductors (e.g., Silicon & Germanium) at absolute zero and room temperature. Thermal generation of electron-hole pairs ($n_e = n_h = n_i$).• 🧪 Extrinsic Semiconductors (Doping): Process of adding impurities to dramatically increase conductivity.- 🔴 n-Type Semiconductor: Doped with Pentavalent impurities (Phosphorus, Arsenic, Antimony). Majority carriers = Electrons, Minority carriers = Holes ($n_e \gg n_h$).- 🔵 p-Type Semiconductor: Doped with Trivalent impurities (Boron, Aluminum, Indium). Majority carriers = Holes, Minority carriers = Electrons ($n_h \gg n_e$).• ⚖️ Mass Action Law: $n_e \cdot n_h = n_i^2$ explained with numerical applications.🔹 2. Formation of a p-n Junction• 🌊 Diffusion & Drift Currents: How concentration gradients drive majority carriers (Diffusion) and electric fields move minority carriers (Drift).• 🛡️ Depletion Layer & Barrier Potential ($V_b$):- Why an immobile ion zone forms at the junction.- Typical barrier potential values: $\sim 0.7\text{ V}$ for Silicon and $\sim 0.3\text{ V}$ for Germanium.🔹 3. Biasing of a p-n Junction Diode• ⏩ Forward Bias:- Positive terminal to p-side, Negative terminal to n-side.- Depletion layer width decreases, barrier potential reduces, current flows easily via majority carriers.• ⏪ Reverse Bias:- Positive terminal to n-side, Negative terminal to p-side.- Depletion layer width increases, barrier potential strengthens, negligible current flows (Reverse Saturation Current).• 📊 V-I Characteristics Curve: Breakdown of knee voltage and breakdown voltage ($V_z$).
