Omer Plays Bass . . . Toto - We Made It  (bass cover)  Bass by David Hungate Bass Used in this Video: Dingwall Guitars Super PJ     Hope you have a look and if you do, don’t forget to click 'Like" and subscribe to the channel   Time for my annual bass cover celebrating the April 8, 1982 release of an album pivotal to my development as a bass player - “Toto IV”. I’ve written alot about Toto, this album and the songs that made me want to play bass (notably ‘Rosanna’    • Omer Plays Bass . . . Toto - Rosanna (bass...   and ‘Africa’    • Omer Plays Bass . . . Toto - Africa (bass ...  ) and that shaped different parts of my playing. Whether listening to or playing along with “Toto IV”  - the album never disappoints with the band - featuring the founding line-up  David Paich on keyboards/vocals, Bobby Kimball on vocals, Steve Lukather on guitar/vocals, the Porcaro brothers - Jeff on drums and Steve on keyboards/vocals and one of my biggest heroes David Hungate on bass. Toto has put out a lot of great music in their career and this album is simply some of the best they or anyone has done - dominating the Grammy’s in 1983  with "Toto IV” taking away seven Grammy Awards including a Grammy award for “Album of the Year” (just look up the other albums in 1982 to see how impressive that is).  This track puts me 60% though the album that is such an eclectic mix of rock, pop, funk, soul and prog. ‘We Made It’, written by Paich and Jeff Porcaro has all the hallmarks of a great Paich written song from the time opening with a big piano part and then to a solid groove by the whole band. The track is likely a filler track deep on side 2 that probably came together quick, as a few others on “Toto IV” seem to be as well, but that doesn’t diminish how great these songs are with a band at the height of their powers in 1982 with multiple band members on pretty much every major record released in that year. From the bass part, it’s a real cooker from Hungate played with a pick (I did as well) and super growly tone that features his trademark constant variations in the part throughout the track - in fact on most of the track he doesn’t play the same thing twice and even when he does play it close its slightly different, which tells me this was probably a one take live off the floor with not alot of preparation for most of the song - something these guys could just go in and bang off with overdubs later for vocals (which featured a great soulful performance from Kimball) and other parts. Coming off my video for ‘Lido Shuffle’, which featured Hungate, Paich and J.Porcaro (   • Omer Plays Bass . . . Boz Scaggs - Lido Sh...  ), I have again gotten well into Hungate’s pick playing - something I spent alot of time on as a young player learning with this album but don't do much any longer as I am mostly a finger style player unless the song needs a pick. Hungate is one of the best at using the right technique for the track - probably why he was such an in demand session player thought his career - whether using pick, finger or slap (like ‘Rosanna’) he always played the right part and "Toto IV” has evidence of this everywhere!! Glad I’m working through the whole record in this way and really absorbing the parts and the techniques that I couldn’t have done when I was younger. Congratulations to Toto on the 44th anniversary of this album - one of my favorites. Looking forward to a 45th Anniversary next year. Wondering which of the remaining tracks it will be?
