The Last Train to Anywhere is a cinematic Afterlight closer built around piano, low synth pulses, huge toms and gradually expanding guitars. It is less about romance and more about two people deciding to leave behind a life that no longer belongs to them, without knowing where they will end up. The chorus is written to feel like the final scene of an 80s road movie.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
The station board was flickering at two
No destinations either of us knew
You had one suitcase, I had one old coat
And nothing left we wanted to bring home
The clerk looked tired, asked us where we'd go
You looked at me and said, "I don't know"
He shook his head and handed us two fares
For the last train running anywhere
[Pre-Chorus]
No plans
No guarantees
Just one door opening
[Chorus]
Take the last train to anywhere
Somewhere they don't know our names
Take the last train to anywhere
Far enough to start again
We don't need to know the ending
We just need to leave from here
Take my hand before it pulls away
The last train to anywhere
[Verse 2]
We watched our town disappear in black
Neither one of us looked back
Factory lights became a distant glow
Then fields and darkness swallowed everything we knew
You rested your head against the glass
Asked if I thought we were moving too fast
I said, "Maybe, but for once I don't care"
And kissed your hand somewhere out there
[Pre-Chorus]
No past
No map
Just steel wheels on the track
[Chorus]
Take the last train to anywhere
Somewhere they don't know our names
Take the last train to anywhere
Far enough to start again
We don't need to know the ending
We just need to leave from here
Take my hand before it pulls away
The last train to anywhere
[Bridge]
Maybe there's a little town
Where nobody asks where we've been
Maybe there's a coastline
Where the morning lets us begin
Maybe we'll get off tomorrow
Maybe we'll ride another day
But tonight the only thing that matters
Is watching home fade away
[Instrumental Build]
(A cinematic build beginning with piano and distant train rhythm, then deep toms, pulsing synth bass and layered electric guitars gradually entering until the arrangement becomes enormous.)
[Final Chorus]
Take the last train to anywhere
Let the whole world fall behind
Take the last train to anywhere
We can build another life
We don't need a destination
We don't need the future clear
As long as you're sitting next to me
Anywhere is somewhere I can be
Take the last train to anywhere
And don't look back tonight
The rails are singing underneath us
And the morning's somewhere up ahead
[Outro]
Anywhere...
Anywhere...
Just don't take me back...
(Fade with train wheels, low synth drone and one final piano chord.)
