Have you ever driven through Philadelphia's Fairmount Park and wondered what those massive stone arches, towering columns, and statues of men on horseback are all about? It's called the Smith Memorial Arch, and there's a fascinating story behind this Philadelphia landmark that dates back more than 100 years. Built between 1897 and 1912, the monument was funded by Richard Smith, a wealthy Philadelphia businessman who made his fortune manufacturing metal printing type. Smith left $500,000 in his will to create a memorial honoring Pennsylvania's military and naval heroes of the American Civil War. But who are the generals depicted on the monument? Why was it built in Fairmount Park? And what connection does it have to Philadelphia's historic 1876 Centennial Exposition? In this episode of Day One, we visit the Smith Memorial Arch to explore its history, the people it honors, and some of the interesting architectural details that most people probably never notice. It's one of those places thousands of people pass without ever knowing the story behind it. Myself included, until today! Have you driven past this monument before? Did you know what it was?
