ART ISSUE 07 / "Into the Woods" Intuitive Abstract Painting Process

Art Issue is an ongoing series where I explore the intuitive state of my own consciousness through color, gesture, texture, and movement. There is no plan. No sketch. No image I am trying to create. I simply start painting and let my hand move, allowing the work to develop through instinct rather than intention. Sometimes the meaning is obvious from the beginning. Sometimes I only understand what I was doing much later. This one started differently. I had taken a few days away from painting. During that time, I spent a lot of time outdoors, hiking through two mountains and wandering through the woods. When I came back, I didn't have a particular emotion or idea I needed to express. I just knew I needed to paint. I had started noticing how much my work was changing since I began showing up consistently — painting once or twice a week, making Art Issues, taking notes, experimenting, and simply keeping my hand moving. So this piece became less about what do I have to say? and more about what happens if I just show up? The colors, marks and gestures came together without a destination. Maybe that's part of the process too. Not every painting needs to come from something heavy.
