Twenty metres above a jungle near Chiang Mai, the loudest thing up here isn't us. It's the cicadas.
One rainy-season Sunday from Chiang Mai: the canopy walkway and the glasshouses of the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in Mae Rim, then the drive up to the Hmong hill farms of Mon Cham (Mon Jam), about 1,300 metres up, where opium fields turned into strawberries and flowers. On the way down, a bowl of khao soi with a view. One day out, for anyone looking for things to do in Chiang Mai beyond the old city.
Good to know (July 2026):
· Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden: about 30 min north of Chiang Mai old city. Entry 80฿ Thai / 250฿ foreigners
· Mon Cham: about 15 min further up the hill. Drinks at the café on the edge 80฿
· Khao soi at Khao Soi Rot Lam: about 55฿
