October 5th, 1582 never happened. Neither did the 6th, the 7th, or any day up to the 14th. Across Catholic Europe that autumn, people went to sleep on a Thursday and woke up on a Friday ten days later. Those days don't exist in the record because nobody ever lived them. That part isn't a theory. It's a papal decree — signed, printed, and still readable today. In 1991, a German writer named Heribert Illig sat down with that same deleted number, ran the arithmetic himself, and got thirteen. His conclusion: the years 614 to 911 AD were fabricated. Charlemagne is a fictional character. Three centuries of early medieval history — councils, manuscripts, kings, buildings, chronicles — invented wholesale by a Holy Roman Emperor and a Pope who wanted the prestige of ruling at the turn of the first millennium and simply moved themselves there. I expected to spend an afternoon on this and be done by dinner. I spent weeks, because the calendar argument at the centre of it is not stupid — and I couldn't dismiss it until I understood exactly where it goes wrong. The thing that finally settled it for me wasn't a document. It was a tree. But the part I wasn't ready for came afterward. Because once you take Illig's answer away, the question underneath it doesn't leave with him. Somebody really did change the year. More than once. In the open. The number at the top of your calendar was invented in 525 by a monk building an Easter table, and he never wrote down how he arrived at it. George Washington's birthday was moved eleven days forward by act of Parliament while he was alive and old enough to read about it happening. Sweden, botching a calendar transition, briefly lived through a February the 30th — a date that has existed exactly once in human history. Russia held out against the Gregorian calendar until 1918, which is the entire reason the event everyone calls the October Revolution took place, on our calendar, in November. Not one of these edits was hidden. Every single one was published, argued over, and enforced in broad daylight. And within two or three generations, in every case without exception, the population on the far side simply forgets that a decision was ever made. The new number stops looking like a choice somebody made and starts looking like a plain fact about the universe.
