Typhoon Champi battered Japan’s Sakishima Islands on Friday, October 23, 2026, snapping traffic lights, breaking an October wind record, and cutting electricity to thousands of households. On Iriomote Island, a gust of nearly 116 mph became the strongest October gust ever recorded at the Ohara weather station. By Saturday afternoon, more than 11,000 households on Ishigaki remained without power, while canceled flights and suspended ferry services left travelers stranded across the islands. In this video, we examine the damage and disruption across Ishigaki, Miyakojima, and neighboring islands, including evacuation shelters left without electricity and the widespread cancellation of flights by Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. We also trace Champi’s development from a powerful storm near Guam into a Category 5 super typhoon over the Philippine Sea, before its approach toward Okinawa. Although Champi is moving away from the Sakishima Islands, the danger is shifting toward mainland Japan. Forecasts indicate that northern Kyushu could receive nearly 18 inches of rain over two days, with additional heavy rainfall possible across western, central, and eastern Japan through Tuesday. Flooding, overflowing rivers, and landslides remain major concerns as the storm system moves northeast. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
