The equipment on the mast will be destroyed in a lightning strike, full stop. There is no avoiding this, and so the focus has to turn on making the masthead equipment into a sacrificial node. This video covers the design of a new masthead controller. This is designed specifically to remove most of the wires going up the mast, replacing them with remote control over a wireless network. The result is that only two wires cross the firewall between the mast's sacrificial node and the rest of the boat.
