When running an articulated locomotive at R3, lateral pressure needs to be considered. The lateral pressure applied when turning a curve can open up a joint in the track, and the current collecting skid can get caught in the joint and stop the locomotive. Also, when running on a turnout, a wheel sometimes lifts up and almost derails. Either way, the R3 curve is too steep for BigBoy to run at high speeds.
