Six Minutes: SHSAT Math, Part 8: Scientific Notation Operations and Square Roots: Multiply and divide in notation; then Square Roots
Multiply and divide numbers in scientific notation by operating on the front numbers and the powers of ten separately. Learn to add exponents when multiplying, subtract when dividing, and fix a front number that falls outside 1 to 10. Then: Learn the perfect squares through 15 squared and how to trap a square root between them to estimate it. Includes a two-way worked estimate of the square root of 90 and the classic negative-root trap.

Practice problems
1. Compute (3 × 10^5)(4 × 10^4). Write the answer in scientific notation. Answer: 1.2 × 10^10
2. Compute (6 × 10^{-3}) ÷ (2 × 10^2). Write the answer in scientific notation. Answer: 3 × 10^{-5}
3. Estimate the square root of 55 to the nearest tenth. (Answer: about 7.4, since 7.4² = 54.76 is 0.24 below 55 and 7.5² = 56.25 is 1.25 above, so 7.4 is nearer.)
4. If x² = 121, list all possible values of x. (Answer: x = 11 or x = −11.)
