Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the temple serves as a significant spiritual and cultural center for the Tamil Hindu community in Singapore. The temple's origins trace back to 1962 when P. Karuppiah, a dockyard worker, dreamt of Lord Murugan and a golden cobra beneath a jujube tree. Upon discovering such a tree near Canberra Road, he established a shrine under it. This humble beginning evolved into a wooden shed and, by 1964, was registered as Punithamaram Sree Balasubramaniar Temple—with "Punithamaram" meaning "Holy Tree" in Tamil. The temple relocated to its current site in 1996 due to redevelopment and underwent reconstruction, culminating in its consecration in 2018. A highlight of the temple's calendar is the annual Panguni Uthiram festival, celebrating the divine marriage of Lord Murugan and his consort Deivanai. This event features vibrant chariot and foot processions, drawing numerous devotees.
