What does Muslim participation in political movements look like in contemporary India? Are Muslims included only as participants and voters, or do they also have the space to shape political narratives, articulate collective demands, and exercise leadership? In this Nous panel discussion, moderated by Wardah Beg, Mohd. Alfauz, General Secretary of the Fraternity Movement; Asad Ashraf, independent journalist; and Ali Javed, of Nous, discuss the questions and contradictions surrounding Muslim political participation, particularly in the context of protests and opposition politics in India. The discussion examines the gap between participation and representation, the marginalisation of Muslim political thought, and the ways in which Muslim concerns are sometimes dismissed as separate from the so-called “real issues” of development, education, and housing. It also explores the challenges of political leadership, the need for independent Muslim institutions, and the possibilities of collective organisation. This conversation moves beyond the question of Muslim presence in protests to examine the deeper questions of political voice, representation and organisation. 00:00:00 - Teaser & Introduction 00:02:53 - Welcome & Topic Introduction: Muslim Citizenship & Political Representation 00:03:13 - Anti-SIR Protests vs. CAA-NRC: Are they a direct continuation?
