When Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, the United Kingdom declared war on the Third Reich, initiating a struggle that would last for nearly six years. Following the fall of France in 1940, the British stood virtually alone in Western Europe against German expansion. Under the leadership of Winston Churchill, the country prepared to resist a potential invasion while mobilizing all of its military, economic, and human resources. One of the decisive moments came with the Battle of Britain, when the Royal Air Force clashed with the Luftwaffe for control of the skies. At the same time, London and other British cities endured intense bombings during the Blitz. But the British war was not confined to its own islands. Its forces fought in the Mediterranean, Greece, Crete, North Africa, and the Middle East, while the Royal Navy protected vital sea routes to keep the country supplied. In the Atlantic, the struggle against German U-boats turned into a prolonged battle for the UK's economic survival. The entry of the Soviet Union and the United States into the war completely transformed the balance of power. Great Britain shifted from enduring resistance to participating in a massive Allied coalition capable of carrying the war back into German-occupied territories. British troops participated in key campaigns such as El Alamein, Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy, in addition to playing a fundamental role in the planning and execution of the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. Concurrently, the British Empire was waging an equally grueling war against Japan in Asia, particularly in Burma and the Indian Ocean. From September 1939 until the defeat of Germany and Japan in 1945, the British experience spanned defeats, evacuations, bombings, resistance, and ultimately victory. However, this triumph came at a staggering human and economic cost, accelerating profound transformations within the British Empire.
