Built to Resist Fire. Still Left to ROT AWAY: Oheka Castle Oheka Castle looks like a story of wealth rescued from decay. But a restored staircase cannot explain why the house became a ruin, or why workers' families lost their brief welcome there. Otto Kahn built his Long Island estate with steel and concrete after fire damaged an earlier home. In 1939, his widow sold it to a sanitation workers' welfare fund. Neighbors challenged the new use, and a zoning battle closed the retreat. A military academy kept the mansion occupied before abandonment stripped away windows, doors, and working services. Restoration brought back gardens and weddings, while the question of who could use the property—and who would pay for it—kept returning. One panel in the Grand Library looks like wood. Look closer.
