Kawagoe at 11:13 PM — Night Rain Walk Through Little Edo Near Tokyo [4K Binaural ASMR]

At 11:13 PM, after Kawagoe's daytime crowds had disappeared, I began this uncut night rain walk at Kashiya Yokocho. Rainfall reached up to about 6 mm/h, gradually easing to around 3 mm/h as the night continued. Located about 30 minutes from central Tokyo, Kawagoe is widely known as "Little Edo." It prospered as a castle town during the Edo period, and its historic center still preserves kurazukuri merchant houses — heavy, clay-walled buildings designed to resist fire. After the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893 destroyed roughly one-third of the town, surviving storehouses inspired merchants to rebuild in this fire-resistant style. Their dark walls, tiled roofs, and wooden facades now form one of Japan's most distinctive historic streetscapes. In 1999, the district was nationally designated for the preservation of its traditional buildings. The walk begins in Kashiya Yokocho, or Candy Alley. This small lane became an important confectionery center after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake disrupted candy production in Tokyo. At its peak in the early Showa period, more than 70 shops operated here. Its nostalgic mixture of candy, mint, cinnamon, and toasted soy sauce aromas was later selected as one of Japan's "100 Scent Landscapes." Long after closing time, the alley is empty, leaving only wet stone, closed shutters, and the sound of rain. At 17:05, the route reaches Toki no Kane, the Bell of Time. Its history stretches back about 400 years. The present tower is the fourth generation, rebuilt after the 1893 fire. Standing about 16 meters high, it still rings four times each day, and its bell was selected as one of Japan's "100 Soundscapes." During this late-night walk, however, the landmark stands silent beneath the rain. From there, the journey continues through narrow back alleys and into Taisho Roman Yume-dori. Once known as Kawagoe Ginza Shopping Street, the area was later reshaped to preserve the romantic atmosphere of Japan's Taisho era (1912–1926), blending traditional machiya buildings with early Western-influenced architecture. At 56:40, the walk enters Renkeiji Temple. Founded in 1549, this Jodo Buddhist temple later became one of the officially recognized centers of Buddhist study under the Tokugawa shogunate. At midnight, its open grounds feel far removed from the daytime sightseeing streets. Toward the end, a red light from a hospital glows faintly in the distance, and the sound of an ambulance briefly enters the recording. Nothing was planned or added — it is simply another real fragment of the city after midnight. Nothing is staged. No narration, no music, no cuts.
