Benign Thyroid Nodule? You May NOT Need Surgery | Ask About RFA
If you have a thyroid nodule that is getting bigger, causing pressure when you swallow, or creating a visible lump in your neck, you may have been told that you need thyroid surgery. But if the nodule has been appropriately evaluated and confirmed to be benign, surgery may not always be the only option.

In this video, Dr. Ergin from the Diabetes, Thyroid & Hormone Center of the Treasure Coast explains thyroid radiofrequency ablation (RFA), an option many patients may not know exists. If a benign nodule is small and isn't causing problems, monitoring may be all that's needed. But when a nodule grows, causes pressure, affects swallowing, or becomes a visible lump, it may be time to discuss treatment options.

💡 What Is Thyroid RFA?
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) uses a specialized electrode placed directly into the thyroid nodule under continuous ultrasound guidance. Radiofrequency energy generates controlled heat inside the targeted tissue while the nodule is systematically treated and surrounding structures are protected.
Unlike surgery, the nodule isn't pulled out. Instead, your body gradually breaks down and absorbs the treated tissue, allowing the nodule to shrink over the following months. Published studies commonly report substantial volume reductions after RFA, often around 60% to 90%, depending on the nodule and duration of follow-up.

🩺 Thyroid Surgery vs. RFA
Surgery can be the right treatment in certain situations. Traditional thyroid surgery usually involves an operating room, anesthesia, an incision, and removal of part or sometimes all of the thyroid. Depending on the operation, there can also be risks involving the recurrent laryngeal nerve, bleeding, and the parathyroid glands, and some patients may require thyroid hormone replacement afterward.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔍 Who May Be a Candidate for Thyroid RFA?
RFA is not appropriate for every thyroid nodule. Before treatment, careful ultrasound evaluation and appropriate biopsy confirmation are important. If there is significant concern for thyroid cancer, suspicious lymph nodes, or another reason surgery is the better treatment, surgery may still be recommended.
RFA also does not make the nodule disappear immediately. The nodule shrinks gradually, larger nodules can sometimes require additional treatment, and appropriate ultrasound follow-up is still necessary.

❓ Before You Agree to Thyroid Surgery:
If you've been told that your benign thyroid nodule needs to be removed, don't automatically assume surgery is your only choice.
Ask your doctor:
Is observation reasonable?
Is surgery really necessary?
Am I a candidate for thyroid RFA?
For the right patient with a symptomatic or cosmetically bothersome benign thyroid nodule, RFA may provide an alternative to traditional surgery while helping preserve normal thyroid tissue.
