Then a million-credit probe ignores the ruins' warning and pushes forward. It disappears. Completely. Clementine Roth isn't an archaeologist. She's the expedition's habitat technician. Water. Power. Environmental seals. All the ordinary things scientists forget about until something breaks. After repairing a cable, Clementine realizes she hasn't eaten. The ancient vestibule is clean, sheltered from the wind, and—most importantly—nobody inside is arguing about the destroyed probe. So she sits down with a sandwich. She drops one crumb. Something beneath the floor opens to remove it. Clementine tells it she's going to pick the crumb up. It waits. Then the ancient doorway opens. Maybe the expedition has misunderstood the ruins.
