It's there when the sun drops into the Atlantic and turns the water to copper. It's there when the moon rises over the sea and the whole coast goes silver and still. It's there in the winter haze, in the summer glow, in the last blue minutes after everyone has left the beach. A dark shape on the water, steady, patient, a little mysterious. Most people watch the sunset and never ask what's out there. Then one morning you take the boat. The mainland gets smaller, the water deepens, and the shape on the horizon becomes granite, gulls, clear water, and a fortress on its own rock, joined to the island by a narrow stone bridge. It turns out the view was only the beginning. Berlenga is a treasure, and it is worth the trip. These photographs are both sides of the same story: the island as I see it from the shore, evening after evening, and the island up close, the way it reveals itself when you finally go.
