Can a CFO successfully make the jump to CEO? Absolutely—but the transition requires more than being an exceptional finance leader. In this video, I break down what CFOs should be thinking about if their long-term goal is to become a CEO, including how to broaden their operating experience, build a compelling leadership narrative, and choose the right first CEO opportunity. We cover: • Why CFOs need to position themselves as business leaders—not just finance leaders • The operating and commercial experiences that matter most • Why P&L ownership can be so important • How to think about industry and company-size tradeoffs • Why a middle-market or private equity-backed company can be an attractive first CEO opportunity • How to build relationships with investors, boards, and executive recruiters before beginning a search • What CFOs can do in their current roles to become more credible CEO candidates The idea for this video came from a conversation with a friend who is currently a public-company CFO and is thinking about becoming a CEO later in his career. His situation raised a broader question I hear frequently from senior finance executives: What actually needs to change for the market to see you as a CEO candidate rather than a CFO candidate? The answer usually isn't simply "be a great CFO." It's deliberately building the experiences, relationships, and narrative that demonstrate you can lead the entire business. If you're a CFO, finance executive, or senior leader thinking about eventually pursuing a CEO role, I hope this gives you a practical framework for making that transition.
