Gateway of India is one of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks, but its history is closely connected to the rise and fall of British power in India.
The monument was conceived to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. Its foundation stone was laid in 1913, and after years of construction, the Gateway was completed in 1924.
In this documentary, we explore how architect George Wittet designed the monument by combining Indian and European architectural influences, and how engineers managed the challenges of building such a massive structure beside the sea.
The Gateway was originally created as a ceremonial entrance for British officials and important visitors arriving in Mumbai. But history gave the monument a very different meaning.
On February 28, 1948, the last British troops to leave India passed through the Gateway of India, turning a symbol of colonial power into a powerful symbol of departure.
Today, the Gateway of India remains one of Mumbai’s most visited landmarks, standing beside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and serving as a major point for ferries travelling towards the Elephanta Caves.
This documentary explores how one monument witnessed both the confidence of the British Empire and its final exit from India.
