Winter, 1775-1776. In the Hampshire village of Selborne, under a steep hill of beech woods, the naturalist Gilbert White watches the birds, the animals, the weather and the people of his parish. Tonight you are his guest: rooks going to bed over the down, an old tortoise digging its winter bed, rushlights made from the scummings of the bacon-pot, crickets on the kitchen hearth, and then the great frost of January 1776: snow filling the hollow lanes, coaches stranded on the Bath road, a silent London, the frozen Thames, and a thermometer falling to zero on a winter dawn.

A calm, slow history story to fall asleep to, with a quiet voice and soft, low music.
You, the guest, are imagined. The village, the weather, the birds, the snow and every word Gilbert White writes come from his letters and journal, published as The Natural History of Selborne (1789). Where he is silent, the narration says so.
