Yamagoe (山越 / 鈴法), meaning "Crossing the Mountain," is a powerful and technically demanding piece belonging to the Zen Buddhist Koten Honkyoku (traditional repertoire) of the shakuhachi flute. Within the Dokyoku style, a lineage popularized by the legendary master Watazumi Doso and expanded by Katsuya Yokoyama, Yamagoe is celebrated for its raw, unfiltered expression and intense physical exertion. The title literally translates to "going over a mountain". In Zen practice and the Komuso monastic tradition, it serves as a profound metaphor for ascetic training, spiritual endurance, and overcoming adversity. The philosophy behind the piece dictates that even when you have conquered the most perilous or exhausting stretch of a journey (or an illness), you cannot break your concentration until you have fully crossed over to the other side Message me for online lessons: 👉 https://www.robintamura.com/shakuhachi If you want to support my content, please consider donating to: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/robin...
