Degauss My Soul began with a conversation about identity and the weight of roles, expectations and feelings inherited from others. My background in Navy electrical systems suggested its central image: degaussing a ship became a philosophical metaphor for clearing the influences that can obscure a person’s own direction. The song brings that naval history together with Adirondack folk and psychedelic exploration. Within the Liddle Did I Know philosophy, it asks which parts of our identity remain ours as the roles we have needed begin to change. David and Dáithi, service, parenthood, art and friendship all belong to the story. The deeper search is for a steadier sense of self beneath those names and responsibilities.
