The Black Mentor: How a $2.7 Million Investment Fraud Scheme Ended in Prison

Joseph James Nantomah, popularly known online as “The Black Mentor,” has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison following an investment fraud scheme that the U.S. Department of Justice says caused more than $2.7 million in losses to at least 39 victims. According to U.S. prosecutors, Nantomah presented himself as a successful real-estate entrepreneur and used conferences, classes and his online persona to attract people who trusted him with their money for supposed real-estate investments. The DOJ says that between May 2020 and December 2024, he obtained $2,762,798.37 from victims, many of whom were Nigerian immigrants and members of his church. Prosecutors said the money was instead used substantially for personal expenses and to maintain the lifestyle and image he presented online. On September 18, 2026, Nantomah was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $2,762,798.37 in restitution to his victims. He will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison sentence.
