Welcome to this immersive podcast episode where we dive deep into one of the most bizarre and eerie maritime coincidences in history! 🤯 In this episode, our hosts unpack the unbelievable twin tragedies of the SS Mahratta. In April 1909, the first SS Mahratta, a Brocklebank Line steamship returning from Calcutta, ran aground on the treacherous Goodwin Sands in the English Channel—an area notoriously known as "The Great Ship Swallower." Fast forward exactly 30 years to October 1939: the second SS Mahratta, also returning from Calcutta and navigating through intense World War II blackout conditions, misjudged the anchorage. Because of Captain Hill's fateful impatience to wait for his pilot, the ship ran aground less than a mile from where the first ship met its end. As the fierce weather moved in, the 1939 ship split in half, sank, and settled directly on top of the 1909 wreckage! Join us as we explore the dark history of the Goodwin Sands, the terrifying survival stories (including a passenger who refused to leave her dog behind in 1909), and the chilling reality of navigating the seas during wartime.
