Is a major jurisdictional confrontation emerging on Constitution Avenue? The Federal Constitutional Court has sought the Supreme Court record concerning Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital, while the Supreme Court has now raised questions surrounding the FCC proceedings and summoned the Attorney General. The developing situation has triggered an important constitutional debate: which court has jurisdiction over matters involving constitutional interpretation and fundamental rights, and what happens when connected proceedings are simultaneously before Pakistan’s two highest courts? At the centre of this legal debate is Imran Khan and the Supreme Court’s earlier order concerning his transfer to a private hospital. Meanwhile, KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has made another dramatic allegation during his Punjab street movement. Afridi claimed that an armed man came close to him with the intention of assassinating him and was caught by his security team. Police, however, disputed the allegation and presented a different account of the armed individual. The controversy comes after Afridi’s earlier Lahore episode, when he alleged that he had been abducted after being taken in a police vehicle.
