Every morning at Versailles, the most powerful man in Europe sat down on his close stool, the door opened, and in came the men who held a royal warrant to be there. At night he sat on it again, in front of his court, and he did not even need to go. Why would a king who could do anything choose to never be alone? What did those minutes cost the courtiers who fought to be in the room, and who was really trapped by the timetable? We follow Louis XIV's day hour by hour, from "Sire, it is time" to the candle at bedtime, through the secret operation of 1686 and a hole in the royal palate, then check the myths: the toilet audiences, the close-stool count, the bath he supposedly never took, and a PHOTO CHECK of the painted king vs. the wax face of 1706. Disputed: whether Louis ever received ambassadors on the close stool (no primary source; Saint-Simon gives that scene to the Duke of Vendôme), the number of close stools at Versailles (274 in one inventory cited by Guerrand 1985; "264" has no source), the claim that he bathed only once or twice (rejected by Stanis Perez), the hour of the 1686 operation (7, 8 or 8:30 am), how many patients Félix practised on and how much he was paid, the waking hour (8:00 vs 8:30), and the exact words of the king's last advice to his heir. Some scenes are AI-generated reconstructions with anonymous figures. Real people appear only in genuine period photographs, paintings and illustrations.
