ABOUT THIS VERSION This is a graded retelling written for beginners, not the original text. It is based on 聂小倩 (Nie Xiaoqian) by Pu Songling. In the original, the scholar Ning Caichen stays in a ruined temple and the swordsman Yan Chixia drives out the demon; here the names are shortened (Xiao Ning, Xiao Qian, Lao Yan), the temple is an old house, and the story is simpler and gentler, so you can read and follow all of it at beginner level.
